we start riding just before the September long weekend.
Robb Massey, BPE has been coaching children to ride Mountain Bike for 9 years. He is a Sprockids Certified Coach and is a Certified NCCP – Let’s Ride! Community Cycling Initiation Coach.  He also writes about cycle touring and riding with kids: robbonhisbike.wordpress.com Robb and his team of volunteers have a few simple values when it comes to kids riding bikes:
– We ride because it’s fun
– Everyone gets to play (and no one sits on the bench)
– Your potential is nearly unlimited
– Cycling is for life
– Success is a great motivator
– Everyone can learn to tell a bad joke.
Mountain biking is all about having adventure, fun, adrenaline, and discovery. The Sprockids Program teaches young people 55 skills, which enable them to safely and successfully enjoy mountain biking. The program serves as the catalyst in engaging young people, their parents, and others in creating a cycling community where all generations share a common interest and activity, that being cycling and the lifestyle that accompanies it.

    1. Hi Mark, good question.

As this is a mountain bike program there are a few things that will help you and your child enjoy the club.
      1. A properly sized bike with front and rear hand brakes (no pedal brakes).
      2. Gears are helpful but not essential – most children under 10 can’t grasp the idea. For that matter, most adults haven’t learned yet to use their gears appropriately. We will learn this skill in Sprockids.

If you need to find a bike that would work, I can point you in the right direction for either a new, used or rebuilt bike. No need to have an expensive bike to have a quality bike.

  1. Where do you usually go for biking? I livd close to Birds Hill Park and wondering if that’s usually where you’d go? If so, I’d love to sign my boys up!

    1. Hi Tonia,
We will ride in Birds Hill, Whittier Park, Bunn’s Creek and Kilcona. There may be a couple other places, but it depends on the trail conditions.
We would love to have you join us.

      1. Ok great! My soon to be 8 year old has done the Burr Oak trail in Birds Hill no problem along with our 10 year old boy and all of us family….with that in mind and to keep my 2 boys together in a group I’d like to sign them both up in the 9-12 age category. Is that ok? With the online registration it may automatically put my 8 year old in the younger group tho.

      2. I have good news, last week I opened a 6-8 year old class at 9:30, so you can have both your children riding at the same time in a class that’s appropriate for them. I have a good friend and experienced coach, Darcy Beer, joining me to help.
        We’re going to have fun!

  2. Hi! I’m interested in signing up my 6 and 8 year old but they’ve just learned on a 2 wheeler last year and aren’t yet fully confident. Are all levels welcome or would you recommend waiting to sign them up next year? Thank you!

    1. Hi Jenn,
This is a learn to ride group. At the beginning of the season we’ll take lots of time to learn the basics and have fun at a pace that helps everyone have fun.
Don’t wait, this is just what you’re looking for. And if you’re riding along with us, you’ll learn how to help your children with their skills too.
      Thanks for asking.

  3. I am having trouble with the registration. After I entered my sons info the ‘category’ section comes up but when I click the ‘next’ button, nothing happens. Can you help me out with that?

  4. Hi Ray Kenny in Winnipeg. My son Pascal wants to join in the fall. I am a level II coach and am willing to help coach.
